1. Canada donates $750,000 to fight gender violence in Nigeria.

The High Commission of Canada to Nigeria says it has donated $750,000 to help women’s rights organisations ramp-up efforts to end Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria.

It regretted that cases of rape and molestation increased in the country during the coronavirus pandemic.


Commenting using Twitter on Wednesday, the commission said; "Canada is pleased to announce an additional $750K for its Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria project."

The commission will partner with Action Aid Nigeria to help women’s rights organisations ramp-up efforts to Gender-Based Violence, which has worsened during COVID-19."

2. Missing Covid-19 Patient in Plateau State has been found in a private hospital.

A private hospital in Plateau State, Rayfield Medical Services Limited, has been shut down for breach of COVID-19 protocol.

It was learnt on Wednesday that the private hospital located at the Rayfield axis of Jos was shut down on the orders of the state Task Force on COVID-19 following the discovery that a COVID-19 patient, who earlier absconded from one of the state’s facilities, was receiving treatment in the hospital.

A health worker from the private hospital confirmed the closure of the private facility to a correspondent of The Punch in Jos today.

3. Amnesty International has slammed the Federal Government for arresting the man who organised Kastina protests.

Global rights group, Amnesty International, has slammed the Federal Government for arresting Nastura Sharif, a man who organised a series of protests against the regime of the President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Spokesman for Amnesty, Isa Sanusi, said in a text message sent to The Punch that the government must immediately release Sharif who is the chairman of the board of trustees of the Coalition of Northern Groups.

Sanusi wrote, "Nigerian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Nastura Ashir Sharif who has done nothing more than speak up in defence of people’s right to life and calling for an end of the rising insecurity across northern Nigeria.

He was simply asking the authorities to do their job. His arrest appears to be an attempt to intimidate and harass both him and others peacefully exercising freedom of assembly and expression. Protest is not a crime, it is a right. Subjecting activists to such arbitrary arrest is a violation of Nigerian and international human rights laws," He added

4. Sanwo-Olu has revealed the reasons why schools can't re-open in Lagos State now.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has given reasons for the continued closure of schools and tertiary institutions in the state.

Sanwo-Olu gave the reasons two weeks after announcing that guidelines for reopening schools would be made public in the state.

He spoke during the 15th press briefing held at the State House in Marina to give updates on Lagos COVID-19 response.

The governor explained that the guidelines for reopening schools were not ready.

He also said schools cannot be allowed to reopen with the increasing cases of COVID-19 in the state.

Sanwo-Olu said the State Government was finalising the protocols to reopen basic and secondary schools, noting that meetings were currently being held with stakeholders.

He however added that online learning already adopted by the State-owned tertiary institutions and secondary schools would go on until stakeholders agree on protocols for schools’ resumption.

5. President Buhari has urged the international community to share knowledge from research and science, in order to fight the Coronavirus.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja, urged the international community to support collaborations and initiatives, aimed at sharing knowledge from research and science in order to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

The President spoke at a virtual Extraordinary China-Africa Summit on Solidarity Against the COVID-19 co-hosted by the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

President Buhari told the summit, co-hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President and AU Chairperson Cyril Ramaphosa, and Senegal President and co-chair of FOCAC Macky Sall, that Nigeria would support and join any joint and collective action plan at regional and global levels to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and its fallout.

6. Ten million girls won't return to school after Covid-19 is over - Civil Society Organizations says.

International and local civil society organisations today being Wednesday, have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider the budget cuts for social services, stating that about 10 million girls across the world were already at risk of not returning to the classroom when COVID-19 pandemic passes.

According to them, many girls would be lost to child marriage, pregnancy, gender-based violence and child labour.

The cuts they are asking the President to reconsider include 54 percent slash in Universal Basic Education budget, 20 percent in Ministry of Education budget and 42.5 in the Basic Healthcare Fund, BHCF, budget.

The Civil Society Organizations who made this call includes, Malala Fund; Connected Development, CODE; Restoration of Hope Initiative, ROHI; ACE Charity; Youth Hub Africa; Hallmark Leadership Initiative; Legal Defence and Assistance Project, LEDAP; Centre for Girls Education; Centre LSD; Education as a Vaccine and the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All, CSACEFA.
