Dagoreti South: Police Entering Houses to Arrest Residents Without Masks, Demands Ksh 5,000 Bribe

Residents of Kabiria, in Dagoreti South have accused police officers from Mutuini police station of arresting people from their houses for not wearing face masks.

They say after they have arrested them, they demand Ksh 5,000 from each person for him to be released before even reaching police station.

According to one of the residents, two police officers from Mutuini police station went to one of the plots within Kabiria on Tuesday, June 23, and arrested two youths who were eating lunch inside their house.

Neighbours say one of the youth was basking one metre from the door and when the officers who saw him from a distance laid a trap and entered his room, handcuffed him and left with him.

"We call upon Police Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai to act accordingly and stern actions taken against these rogue officers," the residents said.

An insider based at Satellite police station told Opera News that the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) has given junior police officers a target they have to hit every day.

"Am an officer based here and everyday we are given orders to ensure we arrest more than 10 landcruisers of people that do not wear face masks,"

"Am an officer and I feel that we are oppressing our people. I have tried to dodge this work but I can't since I just have to follow the orders," the officer who sought annonimity for fear of victimisation said.

Since the first case of the novel coronavirus pandemic was reported in Kenya, the government through the Health ministry imposed some stringent measures aimed at combating it's spread.

Some of the measures included wearing of face masks especially when one is in a social place.

However, the men in blue uniform have been going an extra mile to even arrest people in their houses and cars for not wearing face masks.

The most funny thing is that those with money are being released immediately after they have been arrested, a move residents feel is not aimed to combating the pandemic but rather enriching the officers.
