At the onset of the novel, Corona virus, It could be recalled that earlier this year, the federal government banned all gatherings including religious gatherings, as a way to curtail it's spread.
However, after series of prayers by religious groups, it followed that, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation and chairman of the PTF announced that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the relaxation of the ban on worship centres for four weeks, spanning 2nd – 29th June, 2020.
In order words, worship centres were reopened within the month (June). This was among the recommendations submitted by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) which was approved by President Buhari.
As the relaxation of the ban on worship centres was approved, the Nigerian Centre For Disease Control, NCDC decided to come up with safety guidelines that will curtail the spread of Covid-19 in worship centres.
The agency developed about 8 guidelines that all christians and Muslims should take note of, which include:
1. There should be no entry without facemasks. All attendees and religious leaders must wear a face mask.
2. People who are sick should not go to places of worship. There should be temperature screening on entry.
3. Hand washing facilities and hand sanitizers should be provided at point of entries and strategic points.
4. Attendance at religious settings should not exceed 1/3 of sitting capacity.
5. Religious centres should be clearly marked such that people sit and maintain two metres distance from each other.
6. There should be no form of direct contact. Practices such as handshakes as peace signs are discouraged.
7. Practices that require sharing of materials should be limited. For example, ablution should be performed at home.
8. Religious centres should be disinfected routinely, before and after worship.
Many christians and Muslims seem to ignore these guidelines, but If more cases arise from worship centres, they should not say they were not warned.
All worship centres should take note of the aforementioned guidelines because to be forewarned is to be forearmed.
