Breaking News in Nigeria this Night, Tuesday 30th of June 2020

1. Covid-19 has taught us invaluable lessons - Buhari says.

President Muhammadu Buhari has on Tuesday, inaugurated the $2.592bn Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano Gas pipeline project, admitting that the COVID-19 pandemic has thought his regime invaluable lessons.

He said the government also learnt from some oil-rich countries that have utilised their crude to achieve economic and industrial diversification.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President spoke while inaugurating the pipeline project virtually from the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari was quoted as saying that the pandemic had further underscored his regime’s desire for projects that promote local manufacturing.

The statement read; "President Buhari announced that Nigeria had learnt invaluable lessons from the global COVID-19 pandemic and some oil-rich countries that have used their crude as a pathway to economic and industrial diversification.

On COVID-19, the President said the pandemic had further underscored the drive of his administration for export substitution initiatives and projects that promote local manufacturing."

2. Lawan and Gbajabiamila meets Buhari and Osibanjo over Electricity tariff.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Tuesday visited the Presidential Villa, Abuja as part of efforts to resolve issues surrounding planned hike in electricity tariff in the country.

The two National Assembly leaders first met separately with President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue before meeting again with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

At the end of the meeting with Osinbajo, they told State House correspondents that the earlier plan by the distribution companies to hike tariff from July 1 was untimely.

3. Federal Government must subside electricity for Nigerians - Senate tells Buhari.

The Senate has explained why the Federal Government should subsidise electricity for Nigerians today being Tuesday.

The electricity distribution companies of Nigeria had on Monday told the National Assembly leadership that the only condition to halt tariff hike, was for the Federal Government to bear the difference between the current tariff and the proposed one.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the red chamber on Tuesday, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Senator Gabriel Suswam, and his counterpart in the Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, said increasing the tariff at the moment would be counterproductive.

The upper chamber said the best thing for the Federal Government to do now was to take the challenge of subsiding power by paying DISCOs the balance of the current tariff and the proposed one.

Suswan specifically said there was nowhere in the world where such gestures were not being extended to the citizenry.

He said in a part of the statement; "The president has been doing well, he has spent so much money, and what we expect is that the spending will gradually reduce or diminish as the power sector becomes more efficient.

There are two things, one is to make it more efficient and second, the government will back out just like they have done in the oil sector where subsidy has been completely removed.

Even at that, the government is reducing the pump price. So, should they, in the same vein, increase tariff? It doesn’t make sense.

I think the executive will agree, even though it’s going to come at a cost. But what cost is more than lessening the burden on the people?"

4. Makinde can't surpass Ajimobi - Ajimobi's daughter-in-law says.

Fatima Ganduje-Ajimobi, the daughter of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, says Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, can never surpass the achievements of the late ex-Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

In her response, however, Fatima tweeted, "Lol. Face with tears of joy half-truth is dangerous sha! SM can never ever ever come close to Ajimobi. Not your mate!!!"

The Ajimobi family has been engaged in a feud with the governor since the death of their patriarch last week.

My trust in God to get through this is unshakable."

Let me assure our people that as you can see me, there are many of us that don’t have the symptoms. This time, we would conduct another test and we will know the result. Let me assure our people that the work is going on."
